SeaMorr spent the last few weeks on the hard to have some loving R&R work done. She is perfecto and ready to get splashed back in the water. Looking forward the the month of August and a family trip to somewhere other than West Palm Beach. Great job Keith!SeaMorrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06389876866801139439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7832637104841578051.post-48706170744120186482019-06-05T15:29:00.000-04:002019-06-05T15:29:14.319-04:00Picasso painted a ceiling for everyone to enjoy.....

We are painting the bottom of SeaMorr.....(and no one will see it)

Hold on....why would you paint the bottom of your boat only to put it back in the water - a good question. SeaMorr was hauled and it getting the bottom painted. Should look pretty awesome and less growth on there once she is complete.

Here is her new home while we get her all pretty.
Including visits to West End, Great Sale Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Elbow Cay, Lucaya Beach Marina and back to Jupiter, FL.

10 things we learned on the Shakedown Cruise:

Leaving the Lake Worth Inlet with bumpy 6' seas, however not difficult to handle (boat does a better job than the inhabitants).

FLIR is your best friend. When you are entering a harbour and there are a number of sailboats anchored in the channel, the FLIR can pickup the catamaran on your port side and the two sailboats on starboard.

Pugs....enough said. (Kenn's nose still hurts from explaining the whole pug thing).

The hailer (speaker on the front of the boat) has a built-in microphone...be careful what you say to the pilothouse when anchoring.

Sea Spray Marina (Elbow Cay) will tell you they have seven feet at low tide. You will have just under five feet at low tide and your boat will list to port.

Even though Kim says it will be flat, Georgia knows Kim is lying.

Tender now has ten hours on it (up from .1 hour originally)

BBQ'ing is better when you are anchored or in port. When underway, the RHS will be much hotter than the LHS.

Water maker makes 22gph of water and your ice cubes become crystal clear (your shampoo won't work, but your ice cubes are awesome!)

Sunrises and Sunsets are pretty awesome when there is no land around, however when you watch the moon set while making a 17 hour passage, that is pretty incredible.

Incredible vessel that took us over 3,000 miles to many fresh and salt water areas. The boat was extremely comfortable, fuel efficient and well enjoyed. SeaMorrII will have a long list of features required to match what SeaMorr had to offer!

SeaMorr has SOLD...we are looking for a new vessel, so that we can continue the great adventure....however are looking in 2019 when the kids have moved out. Please note, the boat will not have a basement or a couch/sofa, so the kids will need to leave the family nest and get a place of their own! They are always able to come with us on our journey - we will need deckhands to wash her, tie lines and make sure we are all battened down for times when we are in Block Island or Black Point.SeaMorrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06389876866801139439noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7832637104841578051.post-40893723660429838992014-05-30T18:21:00.000-04:002015-01-03T10:40:18.498-05:00Things we have learned on the trip (this will constantly be updated…)

99.9% of people you meet are awesome and have a tale to tell. The .1% of people are just crusty individuals who don't seem to enjoy anything - a true waste of everything.

Use soft soap in the shower as that Dove soap will only clog the shower sump.

Don't travel on the ICW on the weekends in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami areas. The boaters that are courteous, responsible and respectful are hiding in the marinas, waiting for Monday.

Add a hair strainer to the shower.

Buy the largest anchor that your boat can handle (and that you can afford) - there is nothing like having a great night sleep when the winds are 25+ knots.

When leaving your dingy at the dingy dock, make sure you have a large painter that allows people to move your dingy around so they can get in and out.

Sticky Fingers in Charleston has amazing ribs and chicken wings. It is probably best to order them without any sauce and put as much sauce (the green is the best) as you would like on them.

Glibert's Marina and Resort in Key Largo has the largest Tiki Hut in the world…and that is about it.

Make sure you leave your motor in the water at a dingy dock - it won't puncture another dingy or another fellow boater.

Widen your food silo…make sure you "try" - alligator, hush puppies, mussels, clams, lobster, grouper, conch, tuna and of course Coconut Tempura Battered Fish. Grits are something that you shouldn't try as there isn't any value in corn based pablum.

Your toe nails and finger nails will grow quicker when hanging out.

Grade 7 Math is bizarre…why ask "Is 4,789 divisible by 33?"…in our day, the answer was yes, there just happened to be a remainder - and we figured that out by using long division.

Marine 5200 is your friend. WD40 is pretty cool too, however 5200 is awesome.

When negotiating for a "whole grouper" in Nassau, make sure you negotiate for the head as well….NOTE: I would have thought the head came with the grouper - evidently it does not. Our taxi driver took the head and said he would boil it.

Pigs love to be fed…they will chase you for food - especially watermelon as the pigs and piglets are all over this sweet tasting melon! If you feed pigs ham - actually, don't feed pigs ham.

When it comes to hockey, (mens or woman's) Canada kicks butt.

Use Explorer charts while in the Bahamas, as they are more accurate than the electronic charts from Navionics.

in the queen-size island berth / master stateroom, complete with hanging
lockers, drawers, and built-in cedar-lined cabinets. A guest stateroom features twin

She looks better than ever and we arrived today at the place we have entrusted to help us find her a new family. I'll admit it was emotional turning her engine off at the dock. She has been an amazing boat for us - so many awesome memories we will have forever. Tomorrow we are headed back to Great Exuma - one more dose of Bahamian sunshine, blue water and pancake batter sand before we return to the real world. (which on a positive note we hear has finally given up most of its snow!)

In what has become our boat tradition the day started with Aary's birthday gift - cereal of course - a Variety Pack this time - 10 kinds of cereal to choose from. What a treat ! We successfully threw him in the pool - but it is getting to be more of a struggle as he keeps getting taller and stronger. The other people around the pool just stared….

We tried to surprise Aaron, having found a "Sticky Fingers' online in north Miami, however unfortunately when we arrived it was no longer in business. We quickly realized driving around North Miami wasn't in our best interest, sketchy to say the least, and we headed back to Fort Lauderdale. We came across what turned out to be an amazing restaurant for awesome red meat - Prime Rib, Filet, and Ribs - we were all stuffed by the end. The ice cream cake he requested would have to wait to the next day.

We found a DQ who had a great cake just waiting for us - an excellent choice for breakfast the next day as a 16 yo boy!

We will head to watch the Leaf's play Florida later in the week to complete the birthday celebration. Happy Birthday Aary!
SeaMorr decided she wanted to head back to the US so she would be available for a new family to love. We packed up everything and set the autopilot to 288 degrees west at 7:30am from Bimini. The trip was uneventful as the waves were less than 2', the Gulf Stream was pretty much non-existent (less than 1.5 knots heading north) and there was a slight wind from the south east. We had an extremely easy crossing that non-eventful and non-stressful.

SeaMorr now has 1000 hours on her main engine! We started our trip at 524 hours in Marlboro, New York in September and have put over 476 hours on her and traveled 3,307 miles. We burned on average 3.5 gallons per hour with an average speed of 7.5 knots. It was an uneventful trip as we didn't have any issues - that 440hp Yanmar Turbo diesel is probably the most solid and best piece of technology around!
There are wondeful highlights including traveling over 3,200 miles across many waterways and meeting many new friends and learning many new things. There are things that make you aware that you need to pay attention, including two large yachts that were resting on large rocks due to a lack of preparation and forethought (one yacht owner decided he knew how to pilot a yacht and dismissed the hired captain, the other did not have the forethought to make sure they were docked during high winds and their anchor broke at 3am and they had to evacuate the guests.)

People have asked, what has been the highlight or the best part of the trip....it is kind of asking someone where can you get the best food......for an answer you need to consider, what sort of food are you looking for, where are you located - my point is there is a lot of variables to consider, and here are some of mine.....

I would definitely do the trip again as I am certain there are things that we haven't seen or done, but hard to consider that when you think of all the things we have done. There are anchorages everywhere and the next trip would probably have more 'off the beaten path' side trips as there are over 700 islands in the Bahamas and we have probably only seen or been on 75 of them. There really isn't a place that isn't more wonderful than the last as you head south down the Exumas. The beaches, the people, the views are truly spectacular! We will be spending the next several years in Georgetown during inclement weather and will be flying there directly to hang out on the beaches and to keep the taste of the Bahamas going until we return by boat again later.

The highlight of the trip has to be the people and their stories. People who sail from Gilbraltor on a 40' sailboat with two individuals who have zero sailing skill and make it to the Bahamas. People from Detroit who wanted to sail for only one year and are now on year eight and still heading south. People from California and their two young kids who are heading to Belize after traveling all over the Caribbean and will return sometime late in 2014. The five boats that got together in Cave Cay to watch an almost green flash evening overlooking our neighbour "Magic Man". Jeffrey the Bahamian fishing guru on Farmers Cay who took us to learn how to catch lobster (in fact showed us a lobster in 12' of water, however that lobster was able to survive after an hour of harassment). The taxi driver in South Carolina who wanted to know where we lived and we said two hours east of Toronto - BIG mistake.... thank you crack smoking, drunken stupor, "I will kill you" mayor! The woman who had 78 pairs of shoes heading with her boyfriend southbound.....and Aaron explaining to her that she didn't really understand Obamacare. All in all, everyone has been incredible and the stories have been incredible. Many people are doing extremely interesting things and some would argue we fit that category.......

Not this time. This is a very not happy time)Bahamian adventure ends tomorrow. Thought I'd just put up a little point form list about what we did here. If you don't want to read the entire blog, this is like a gloss over.

We drank so many frozen drinks. Daiquiris, Coladas, I think someone even had a Mojito at one point.

I know that we dodged a bullet by skipping the worst winter in, like, 30 years, but it was still occasionally cold here. Like, not "put on a sweater" cold, but if you just got out of the pool, and your beach chair is in the shade, and there's a slight breeze, it becomes uncomfortable to drink a frozen drink.

We went scuba diving. Several times. Kimmy, Corey and I are now PADI certified rescue divers.

Good, solid wifi is a godsend. I never realized how important that extra mb/s really was.

The stars here are beautiful. 2 days ago, middle of the ocean, no land in sight, with a new moon. It's a toss up between then and in Algonquin park for where the brightest stars I ever saw were.

You meet some really weird/awesome/interesting people on a trip like this. 4 different families had sold everything they owned and now lived on a boat for life. 1 person had 76 pairs of shoes. 1 person was crewing on a boat that had crossed the Atlantic. It was the first time that he had ever been on a boat in his life. He was cool.

We ate some really good food on this trip. Ribs at a bar in North Bimini. Cracked conch on a picnic table on Little Farmer's Cay. Chicken Wings at Sticky Fingers in Charleston. A pulled pork sandwich in Key Largo. 5$ burger night at Sharkey's. Onion rings on Staniel Cay. A daiquiri on Harbour island. Prime Rib in Solomons. Mexican food on Great Exuma.

There is a rumour that if you watch a sunset over the ocean, there's a flash of green just as it goes under the horizon. I've watched many sunsets, and I have yet to see it.

Never, ever speak ill of your boat. It will get mad, and the next day something will break. This has happened to us three times.

Granny Smith apples are better than Galas.

The butcher shop on Exuma is amazing.

The water here is bluer. This isn't some "The water's always bluer on the other island" thing, it is actually bluer.

I'm probably going to add more bullets later.

Literally in the middle of no-where (confirmed by looking at the SPOT location) we set anchor well off the channel in the middle of the Great Bahama Bank surrounded by nothing but water in all directions, no land in sight. It was awesome. It was beautiful. It was peaceful. Ok well maybe it was a bit bumpy all night but it was still a wonderful thing to do together in the Bahamas.

We drove most of the day on calm waters, watching the water change from the blue Tongue of the Ocean to turquoise of the Banks. The only excitement of the day being a MayDay call from a fisherman who's engine had died leaving him adrift. Too bad where he said he was (because he could see it on a clear day) which was close to our location, and where he actually was 20 miles south made it quite impossible for us to do more than call Bahamas Air and Sea Rescue to help him.
We BBQ'd chicken and watched the sunset, complete with the Conch horn and slept under the stars. (Ok maybe we stayed up most of the night with the boat rocking, but the stars were impressive scenery)
The next day we continued driving across the open Banks & were happy to see dolphins again, even if just briefly at the bow. I will never get bored of watching the water and just hanging out together on SeaMorr - it has been an awesome adventure. I'm finding neither the words nor pictures to describe….getting quite sentimental all over again :)
It certainly was far less crowded in January - but the frozen drinks are just as good!

So, we thought that it would be a good idea to swim with sharks.

Woah, woah, don't freak out. They weren't those really big sharks. With like, 6 inch teeth. And cold dead eyes that look down into the depths of your soul and bleed malevolence into the core of your being.

No, these were those really cute sharks that would only be able to, like, disarm you (in the literal sense of the word. Or maybe disleg you. Is that a word?). Either way, they weren't really big.

So, we went on a shark dive. On a shark dive, you get your scuba gear on, and then go to the bottom, hold on to a little rock, and then don't move a muscle as if your life depended on it, because it probably does.

No one has ever died on one of these shark dives, but there's a first time for everything. I'd also like to point out that the three guides are all in chain-mail shark protective suit things, while we were all in squishy wetsuits.

Here's a video of a part of it…..The shark only hit the camera once in this clip….

It was AWESOME!
We're almost home, happy for some, (Corey getting to see Julio again) and sad for others (Kimmy doesn't get to lay on the beach anymore). For those of you not on a boat in the Bahamas, to cross from Florida to the Bahamas, you go from somewhere in Florida to Bimini to Chub Cay to Nassau and then wherever after that. So we are in Nassau, waiting for the 50 mph winds to leave so that we can get to Chub in one day then Bimini (and waiting there for a weather window) then to Florida.

During the last week of bad weather we have been hiding out in Palm Cay, and exploring Nassau, with our awesome friends on "Stephanie M". We have rented a car and visited many places in town and out of town.

Such as........

- The boys went boat shopping (mom was happy that they didn't buy anything)

Dad bought strange small brown paper bags off a sketchy venter beside the road,(they were filled with peanuts just for clarification)

Went to an awesome restaurant, where Stephanie(from Stephanie M.) played a very intense game of checkers
This includes stopping at Wardrick Wells, the headquarters of the Exuma Land & Sea Park. From Cambridge Cay we used our "Canadian Politeness" over the radio and were able to reserve the last available mooring ball for the night in the north mooring field (the place everyone wants to be). We entered the marked channel and passed all the sailboats on the outer mooring balls until we reached #22 at the very end of the row. With an incoming tide, we had an unimpeded view of the cut and untouched islands for miles ahead. On an outgoing tide, we simply turned our chairs around. It's not always bad to be last.

The main reason for visiting Wardrick Wells was to follow the age old tradition of climbing BooBoo Hill and leaving a piece of driftwood with your boats name inscribed on it. We constructed a sign out of seashells and driftwood we collected long ago and set off up the hill. In our usual fashion, we didn't take the tourist beaten usual route and opted (through someone's map reading abilities…) to take the path less traveled. Long walk short, we saw the whole island and mastered the art of balancing on uneven rock and rickety old bridges and made it to the summit. By "summit" I mean a relatively gigantic mountain that allows you to see miles in every direction, even over the masts of all the sailboats, on one of the highest points in the whole entire Exumas… (for those of you that haven't been, you'll be impressed. For those of you who have, just play along with it). We left our sign as a memory of our last day in the Exumas and headed back to SeaMorr sitting peacefully in the still clear waters of the mooring field.
NOTE: the Exumas Land & Sea Park is a no-take zone. Removing any organic or inorganic material is strictly prohibited and severe penalties are enforced. There are 4 Royal Bahamian Military members stationed on Wardrick Wells, all of whom carry very big intimidating weapons… so that fish we ate was "dolphin safe tuna" we bought in a grocery store way back in Fort Lauderdale. We didn't break any rules or regulations while inside the Land & Sea Park and to those of you at the park who we gave our blog address too, I hope you have a very pleasant day:)

Anyways, before I can tell you about the hours of labour I spent shaping and perfecting this beautiful instrument, I have to tell you two stories. Well, the first one isn't really a story, it's more a single sentence describing a repeating event that I wanted to take part in. And since it's only one sentence long, it shouldn't take you too long to read. So don't get mad at me for wasting your precious time by writing way too much. So. Right. Here's one story and one single sentence describing a repeating event that I wanted to take part in. Except in the other order. So it's really more like one single sentence describing a repeating event that I wanted to take part in, and one story.

The single sentence describing a repeating event that I wanted to take part in: Every sunset, people (mainly sailboaters) blow conch horns to tell blind people that the sun is setting.

The story (which is going to be slightly longer than the last thing, because that was one sentence, and this is a whole story. Not a particularly long story, but a story all the same): for Christmas (2012, while we were still planing this trip), my grandparents (hi Grandma and Grandpa, I know you're reading this) gave me a harmonica. I'm pretty sure that it was all an elaborate plot to have my family kill me in my sleep because I would be playing a harmonica way too loud in a 150 square foot boat and they decide to murder me to get some sleep. Luckily, I am still (at exactly 8:12 on March 23rd, 2014) alive, so that has yet to happen.

So, because I wanted to be like those sailboaters and because my family hasn't killed me for playing an annoying instrument really loudly, I decided to construct a conch horn. One of the loudest, most obnoxious, most annoying instrument ever invented (I don't think things through very often).

For everyone who wants to know how one makes a conch horn (and I know that at least half of you do) I will tell you. First, find a conch shell, which really isn't that difficult.

there's one of these on, like, EVERY island

Then, you make sure that no one is still living in said conch shell. We have made that mistake. Twice. After insuring you are in possession of an abandoned conch shell, you clean the shell until it is really nice looking.

Looking good

Then, you saw the end of it off. The pointy end. This makes a mouthpiece which you then blow into, which makes a really loud noise. Do this outside. I have made that mistake. More than twice.

And then you have a conch horn.
